The content for this week unraveled the intersection of space and art, ultimately coalescing with the overarching entanglement of science, technology, mathematics, and art. It is really cool to see how space technology/science is a continually evolving and growing field which stems from a multiplicity of other disciplines. While conducting my own research, I came across some projects created by the organization Beyond Earth which aim to marry art and space in a more direct, beautiful fashion in an effort to “build global awareness…and explore creativity in the far reaches of outer space" (Beyond Earth). They created the project Living Light—an artistic sculpture meant for space—combining “biology, artificial intelligence, and aerospace technology to explore the connections between our planet and the boundlessness of space” (Lewinski). This was such a cool and fascinating representation of how enriching and satisfying it is for art and science to coexist on the same tangible platform, and to be given the space to do so.

I also learned about former astronaut Nicole Stott, a painter and astronaut, who champions the intersection between science and art. While in space, she was enamored by the beauty of it, so she painted it.

Once retired, she continually advocates for the “beautiful intersection between art and science” (Stott) which is ubiquitous in all aspects of both fields. She started the Spacesuit Art Program with the intention of using art as a healing medium of connecting people to science—“artists, astronauts and cosmonauts, space professionals, health experts, and most importantly children in hospitals, refugee centers, orphanages, & schools from around the world” (Space for Art Foundation) are the foundation of this project. The kids paint on fabrics which are ultimately stitched together to form spacesuits named “HOPE, COURAGE, and UNITY” (Guzman) which are actually taken to space voyages. To learn about this was absolutely moving and beautiful; it brings me so much joy to realize the power of art, and how it is being applied to even the furthest corners of the universe.
